大连芯片厂投产有感

这段历程令人激动万分!

从2005年5月末的一天我被问及是否愿意参与可能在中国新建芯片厂的选址工作到现在,5年的时间和变化像是弹指一挥间,令我惊叹不已。

当时,我真不知道这将是一段什么样的历程。日前我们在大连这里举行的芯片厂投产庆典是一个标志性的时刻,对于我来说,它代表了许许多多非常聪明、非常勤勉的英特尔人想要实现的目标,将5年前我们要在中国某个地方择址建设芯片厂的概念,到今天变成在整个晶圆生产线启动生产的现实。我倍感荣幸的是能够与众多最有创意、最能启发人们想象力的员工一起工作。而更值得称赞的是英特尔来自不同区域的许多部门为了取得今天的成功,在各个阶段发挥的关键作用,以及英特尔的员工以饱满的热情和渴望,协同处理和应对许多的艰巨的问题和挑战。

在建设大连芯片厂的这段历程中,还有一点最令我兴奋,这就是看到英特尔大连员工团队的壮大。从一开始我们只有一支非常小的核心团队,发展到今天约1,500人的大团队。我们聘用的员工来自中国各地,加上一支来自英特尔全球芯片制造网络组成的技术培训团队,他们在较短的时期内已经融合在一起,形成了独特的英特尔大连企业文化,也使大连芯片厂与英特尔在世界其它地方的芯片制造设施一样,严格执行相同的安全、质量、成本和进度标准。虽然大连芯片厂仍要在”英特尔卓越制造虚拟工厂网络”中证明自己是一个有贡献的成员,但我们已经为此取得了非常理想的进展。

在英特尔大连公司,我见证了英特尔企业文化的传承,一个庞大的团队树立了纪律严明、追求卓越的价值观。我在英特尔30年的经历中曾参与过许许多多的项目,但我在大连的体验又给了我最深的感触,那就是我们的员工素质和我们的公司力量!

大连芯片厂是一个伟大的成就——它为英特尔的历史又树立了一个里程碑。有人说,过去的行为是对未来行为的最佳预测。想到我在英特尔这么多年来的亲身经历,我对英特尔的未来更加充满激情!

My thoughts on the opening of Fab 68

Wow, what a journey!

As I reflect back to the day in late May 2005 when I was asked if I would be interested in participating in the site selection activity for a potential new fab in China, I am simply amazed at what has transpired since then.

I had no idea of the journey on which I was about to embark. The celebration we’ve just had here in Dalian marking the opening of the Fab is a symbolic moment. To me, it reflects what a lot of very smart and committed Intel people can achieve. Over the last five years—as we have moved from just a concept of building a fab somewhere in China, to the reality of full loop wafers in the line—I have had honor of working with some of the most creative and inspiring people imaginable. It is incredible how many different parts of Intel have played critical roles in the many steps we’ve taken to reach where we are today. I have been amazed at the enthusiasm and the eagerness from people all across Intel to tackle and resolve some very difficult challenges.

One of the most exciting aspects of this journey called Fab 68 has been to see the Dalian team come together. We started with a very small core team. Today we have grown to nearly 1500 Dalian team members. We have hired employees from all over China and combined them with a technical training team from all over the world. In a very short period of time the Dalian team has melded together, developed its unique Fab 68 culture, and has executed with the same exacting standards on safety, quality, cost and schedule that Intel expects worldwide. Fab 68 still has to prove itself as a worthy partner in that elite community called Intel’s virtual factory network, but I know that our progress so far has been excellent.

I have found it incredible to witness the fruits of Intel’s cultural values—a huge team focused on excellence and discipline. I’ve worked on many programs in my years here at Intel. Once again, my experience in Dalian has left me extremely impressed by the quality of our people and the greatness of our company. Fab 68 is an impressive accomplishment—a fitting addition to a long string of amazing accomplishments across Intel. It has been said that past behaviors are the best predictors for future behaviors, and given what I have seen over my 30 years in Intel, I could not be more excited about what the future of Intel holds.
